Spin-Darc was named Finalist in this year’s Saving Lives at Birth Grand Challenge, sponsored jointly by USAID, the Government of Norway, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Grand Challenges Canada, DFID, and KOICA. The challenge seeks breakthrough innovations to help mothers and newborns during their most vulnerable hours.
Almost all of the neonatal deaths during this high-risk period occur in low- and middle-income countries, especially in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, where access to rapid, accurate microbiology testing is severely limited, and infectious diseases are prevalent among mothers and babies. Spin-Darc’s groundbreaking method for the rapid, low-cost intrapartum testing of mothers for microbial infections such as Group B Streptococcus and E. coli can revolutionize the delivery of healthcare services in poor-resource communities and improve the health and survival of newborns.
We are honored to be one of the 53 finalists selected out of more than 550 innovative proposals in this seventh round. The finalists will gather at the DevelopmentXChange in Washington DC, from July 25-27, to pitch their innovations and to attend workshops, discussions, and networking events. We hope that our innovation will win the vote of the judges – and you can help us win People’s Choice Award 2017 by voting here!
